Last year, my dad found this gem tucked away somewhere. He wonders if it was my “first official layout job.”

I can’t remember how old I was when I printed these flyers (8? 10?) — nor what program I used to design them — but I do remember posting them around the house and thinking it a better money-making scheme than doing chores for an allowance. (Later, I would attempt to mow the lawn for a steep fee of $10, but I quickly gave up that game when I realized it entailed sweat and dirt and being near ant hills.)

Please note the following:

“This combination is perfect if you have to rush to places and have not time.”
“If you choose this choice …”
“This is perfect for those hard days of work at the office or uniform shop.” (Mom ran my elementary school’s in-house uniform outlet out of a muggy little room in the cafeteria.)
“Not suitable for small children or some adults.” (Because, as a child, I was ridiculously strong. You should see me now; I’m practically superhuman.)
“This is for the little children … This one is great for Gail.” (My little sister; Just broadening my demographics. Targeted marketing and whatnot.)
“All of my most grand secrets in one package …” (Six whole minutes! A real bargain at $3.)
“Please let me know 5 minutes in advance by leaving a note with my secratary [sic] (the bed).”

High-schoolers from Monrovia just finished an immersive journalism program in our newsroom, where they worked to produce a teen magazine for the San Gabriel Valley. I like the adjective attached to the Rose Mag in this student’s column. The kids are alright.

(Noted: It has come to my attention that “slick” could be a synonym for “glossy,” but … but … we’re printed on matte stock. So I’m still ascribing a positive value. There.)

For example, when I designed this spread for Rose Magazine, I had to ask myself, “What would an ice-cream lover do?”

The image above shows the spread held upright, like a poster, but a casual reader flipping through the magazine would see everything like this:

Reader stopper? Yes. The little signpost in the corner reads:
